Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, two of the four screenwriters on Paramount’s Iron Man, have been hired to write the studio’s reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Viacom, which owns both Paramount and Nickelodeon, purchased the rights for $60 million last October and plans to coincide the new live-action film’s release with the launch of a computer-animated TV series in 2012. Producers have ditched the “not great” draft by John Fusco and are now asking for a first draft from Marcum and Holloway by this October, in order to have it ready for potential directors in time.
Deadline reports the $1 million deal is indicative of their urgency and their overall dream to turn the four reptilian crime fighters into a huge franchise, like they have with Marvel’s ironclad hero and Michael Bay’s Transformers. In fact, Bay’s remake-happy production company, Platinum Dunes, is even overseeing the live-action feature.
In previous discussions, executive producer and TMNT co-creator Peter Laird hinted at the use of “face replacement technology” seen on the Where the Wild Things Are creatures. Scott Mednick, who produced that Spike Jonze film, is involved as a producer on this project.
Marcum and Holloway’s credits include Punisher: War Zone and the upcoming reboots of Buck Rogers and Highlander with Justin Lin attached to direct.
