Del Toro Walks Away From The Hobbit
It’s to be expected really. Nobody can wait around for ever to get a film off the ground. Especially one with an albatross around the neck called MGM. Mexican director
Guillermo Del Toro has abandoned plans to direct The Hobbit and announced his decision via web forum
The One Ring. The reasons?
“Mounting pressures of conflicting schedules.”
Only last week he told the world the film was indefinitely postponed while MGM were stuck with money woes since they own a large chunk of the rights. Del Toro went on to say:
“After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand.”
No doubt Del Toro was at the end of his tether regarding the constant set-backs. Will Peter Jackson take up the challenge of bringing it to the screen? He’s said he won’t, but you never know.
It might not all be depressing. Perhaps Del Toro could now direct his long-planned HP Lovecraft adaptation, At The Mountains Of Madness. Time waits for no man and Guillermo Del Toro waits for no hobbit. It’s a great shame because he was such a brilliant match for the material.
